I think schema therapy creates a useful frame of reference for understanding my issues as it places them in a context that I can relate to. For example, it helps me understand my triggers and why I respond in certain negative ways to situations, and by doing so, helps me overcome them. It seems quite patient-centric, at least compared to the previous forms of therapy that I have experienced. I have more understanding of my issues than I did in previous therapies.

Meditation has taught me the skill of shifting my attention and harnessing the present moment. Before that, my thoughts and experiences were fused. There was no neutral resting ground. I now find that in my breath. And although it’s a constant tug-of-war, often just noticing a negative thought is enough to unarm it. No practice or realization has ever so subtly changed the essential quality of my life.

Schema therapy has helped me deconstruct difficult problems and emotions that have felt unsolvable and desperately confusing. The idea that there are reasons I'm feeling how has been liberating. It has allowed me to start lessening self-judgement and concentrate on deconstructing some of the unhelpful schemas that I've built over the years.
